Thomas Körtvélyessy

the dance/r is present – de dans/er is aanwezig

Referring to The Artist Is Present (2010) by Marina Abramovic at the Museum of Modern Art New York (2010), choreographer Thomas Körtvélyessy presents video recordings of two dances from his White Series that he revisited as artist-in-residence at Emily Harvey Foundation Venice 2014.

Sokrates (2000) is a stream-of-consciousness itinerary of the performer, engaging the city and its inhabitants in improvised and shared moments of performance. walking con·sens·us / skytime (2006) uses the daily action of walking performed in a group, plus video-projection, to create an intermedia event that engages the entire performance location. The latter piece is specially dedicated to the memory of 20th century pioneer Elaine Summers, co-founder of the legendary original Judson Dance Theater in 1960s New York, originator of a unique approach to movement, Kinetic Awareness®, and long-time mentor of Körtvélyessy from 1993 to 2014.

The performances during the Venice residence were generously made possible by Emily Harvey Foundation, and co-sponsored by aisthesis (stichting in oprichting) in co-production with Marianna Andrigo, LiveArtsCultures, C32, eventi-arte venezia, Kairòs Venezia, with special thanks to Berlin-based visual artists Jean-Ulrick Désert and Gisela Weimann.

The opening of the exhibition on Sunday August 30th will be preceded by a re-performance of Sokrates on August 29th at 19.00h, and at 14.00h on Sunday.
